Mistakes make us human.

This lesson came from my mother-in-law. My mom taught me that I can learn from my mistakes and not to let them steal my future, but she also firmly believes in paying the consequences for bad choices. Sometimes I think we never know when to stop paying for our mistakes. As a woman and a former catholic from a long line of Irish women the guilt is genetic. When I mess up I tend to pay for it for a very long time...at least that's what the voices in my head try to tell me.
My mother-in-law, Mara, on the other hand, has a much more freeing view of the mistakes we make in life. We all make them and according to Mara if we learn from them and strive to do better then there is no reason to dwell on what might have been.
Our mistakes give us stories, some of them are funny and some of them are motivating. All of them are important. From Mara I learned to accept that I am a human surrounded by humans and that is what makes life so much fun. Getting it right wouldn't be nearly so much fun if we didn't understand what it feels like to get it wrong.
Mara, thanks for your acceptance and wisdom.
